Research Journal #4

I am interested in researching the effect depression has on poor populations…

because I want to find out how prevalent it is, how it manifests itself, and what effect it has on the population at large…

and this is important because once thoroughly researched and understood, there is a possibility that solutions could be found and suffering could be alleviated.

1) Are the symptoms for depression the same across the board, or are there more prevalent symptoms in poor populations compared w. the middle & upper classes?

2) Do poor populations have a greater percentage of depressed people?

3) How do municipal/state/national governments currently deal with the mental health of poor populations?

  1. This research paper is on poor communities and the influence of depression in those communities. They are researching this because they want to find out how widespread this problem is, what effects it has, and how it influences the community as a whole. This is an important topic to them because they want to find a way to solve this problem and relieve suffering.

    Three Questions:
Does the depression effect more men than women?

Does depression have a physical effect, as well as an emotional one?

What type of poor community is this focused on?

    Three types of evidence:

    Statistics on depression
    Psychological studies
    Medical studies

  2. I agree with the rephrasing of my question – it’s exactly what I was thinking when I was typing out my original entry. With the questions, I do not want to focus in on different genders for my research project because I really want to look into the community-level effects that depression has. Also, there is already a lot of research on how depression affects both mind and body, and I would rather steer away from that. However, I really appreciate the suggestion about narrowing my focus on one type of impoverished community. I think I need to do that. I wish I knew what types poor communities came in. Ghettos? Blue-collar coal-mining ones? The homeless?

I am interested in researching the effect of depression on poor populations such as ones in (the ghetto/small blue-collar towns/the streets) because I want to find out how prevalent depression is, how it manifests itself, and what effect it has on the population at large. This is important because once thoroughly researched and understood, there is a possibility that solutions could be found to alleviate suffering in these communities.

  3. They say that depression takes a huge toll on people – people like adolescents, middle class paper pushers, etc – and this has a negative effect on society , so it is important that they are provided all means (drug, herbal, counseling) of help to correct their medical problem.

I say that depression has to be taking an enormous toll out of low-income people and societies too. There is an enormous gap though in the amount of research done on this population compared with other populations (teens, middle and upper class). Poor populations have even less resources than others, so why have they been receiving the least amount of care and attention when they need it the most?
