Journal Post 4: Research Question

I am interested in researching the effect of digital piracy on the music industry because I want to find out how to adapt the business models previously used for analog sales to the digital world in a manner that is acceptable to the consumer and the artists. This is important because the music industry need to change and adapt in order to stay financially stable and continue providing consumers with the music they want.

What is the primary source and distibution method of pirated material(physical sale or digital sale)?

What are the primary reasons for pirating music?

How can the needs of the industry be distributed to the consumer in a way that is reasonable and intuitive.

  1. The writer is concerned with researching the impact of illegal music downloading on the market for music because he would like to know if the market for downloaded music and the market for music that is not downloaded are guided by the same rules. This is relevant because people who buy music may no longer be able to do so without a different way of governing electronic means of obtaining music.

Do different genres of music cause different piracy issues?

Has there been any evidence of financial instability yet in the music industry, and if so, can it be proven that it is the fault of piracy?

What country will you focus on?

Your evidence probably come from economic journals. You may also want to look up the intellectual property debate. Finally, you may want to focus on the idea that some goods cannot possibly be protected from stealing.

  2. I agree with the summary. The suggestions are okay. I don’t believe it is really possible to take a genre specific approach to this, as tracking this is very difficult. To narrow it down by country is also almost impossible, as filesharing is not limited to, and cannot really be accurately analyzed in, a specific area.

I think that the issue of digital piracy is too new for there to be many economic findings related to the issue.

The last point is definitely good.

  3. I am interested in researching the topic of digital piracy and how the music industry can adapt and change it’s business model in a manner that is acceptable to consumers. It is important because as piracy becomes easier, the industry needs to figure out how to deal with it.

  4. They say that piracy needs to be defeated because it is causing the industry to lose money.

I say that piracy is impossible to defeat given the way technology advances. The music industry needs to find a way to adapt to this new means of distribution and use the publicity to bring more attention to a more physical type of merchandise. What is that way?
