In Class Pecha Kucha Reflection:

When I was creating my presentation i realized that I need to work on defining and limiting the variables in the analysis I do.

After presenting my pecha kucha, the questions asked by the class revealed that I needed to explain why it was important and who has high stakes in the outcome, as well as summarizing the current research better.

My most promising source appears to be “The Music Industry on (the) Line? Surviving Music Piracy in a Digital Era.” I think this will helpful because I haven;t really seen data on the impact of piracy in the music industry. I’ve only seen what lawyers claim to be damages for filesharing(often absurd), and heard “lost sale” claims.

Thinking…

When Stallybrass says, “You are not, nor should you be, the origin of your own thoughts (any more than you are the origin of your own voice)”, he doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t think. Instead he means that thoughts should be inspired by the thoughts of others and articulated in a manner that doesn’t claim to be our own, but instead introduces an “original” idea that is our own.

Journal Post 4: Research Question

I am interested in researching the effect of digital piracy on the music industry because I want to find out how to adapt the business models previously used for analog sales to the digital world in a manner that is acceptable to the consumer and the artists. This is important because the music industry need to change and adapt in order to stay financially stable and continue providing consumers with the music they want.

What is the primary source and distibution method of pirated material(physical sale or digital sale)?

What are the primary reasons for pirating music?

How can the needs of the industry be distributed to the consumer in a way that is reasonable and intuitive.

Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. – Sherlock Holmes

In reading the concepts for the exhibits and their responses, it seems to me that the curators of the museum wanted to give the visitors a view of the facts. While they did paint a portrait of the Japanese as victims, the complaints against the museum seemed, to me, to be pushing a pro-American view of the war.

This was an exhibit that challenged the official story, presenting painfully brutal facts that were often skipped in descriptions of the bombings, but also leaving it mainly up to the reader to decide. I feel that the opposition to the exhibit was largely due to that fact that presenting these facts are generally pushed aside or skimmed when explaining the bombings.

While there seems to be no reconciling of the two views, I am disappointed that the museum caved to the official story, as I for one was fascinated by the opposing view of the original designs. The simple description “dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat” is entirely inadequate to describe the plane that ushered in a new age of warfare and changed forever the way we view civilian casualties.

Either way, this was about both sides wanting to display the facts in a certain light, or in context

A poem saved by Frederick Douglass

I think this poem shows an appreciation of farming despite the fact that he was a former slave. I think that this shows that he struggled with his freedom rather than the tasks given to him by his masters. I can only imagine the way I would view a farming scene after having been enslaved for my whole life and knowing that my brothers and sisters were still captive. We can really see how he exhibits a passionate hatred for slavery, but then maintains the ability to see the beauty of a farm scene. I think this is a characteristic that made him a prime example for other freed slaves, as well as a capable tool in disproving many common ideas about slaves.
