Journal #4

I am interested in researching the usefulness of bike lanes. I want to research this because I want to find out if they are actually safer for bicyclists. This is important because if they are not safer, then we should stop promoting them as much as we do.

How did bicycle lanes start? Who came up with the idea? When did they start?

Was the original intent for safety?

Are there any main organizations for or against bike lanes?

  1. Jon would like to find out the purpose of bike lanes to see if it actually makes a difference in a biker’s safety. This knowledge would be useful because if these lanes are not infact aiding a biker’s saftey then society should stop endorsing them.

-Are you looking at bike lanes in major cities, suburbs, etc?
-Are you going to look at other factors such as how it affected the community? such as if it was more of an inconvenience to society than help, etc.

    Evidence:
-books or facts on when these lanes were created and for the purpose of them
-research/studies on how they have or have not improved the safety of bikers
-articles or stories of how these lanes have improved or not improved safety in a city or area

  2. I agree with Victoria’s rewrite of my question, and because it wasn’t in the same three step format, I liked the way it sounded better.

I would be looking at how they have affected suburbs mainely, because I don’t off the top of my head know iof any major cities that have bike lanes. Also, by looking at the origins of bioke lanes would be a great tool in writing the paper.

I want to research the effects bike lanes have had on biker’s safety. This is important because if bike lanes are in fact doing more harm to biker’s then not having bike lanes, we as a society should stop endorsing them.

  3. They say that bike lanes give bikers a safe place to ride on the well paved roads.

I say that bike lanes are not as safe as they are made out to be and in fact do just the opposite of their original intent.
