Research Questions

I am interested in researching the changes in the food industry, specifically the introduction of high fructose corn syrup, because I want to find out if these changes are related to the increase of food related allergies and intolerances and this is important because what is added to our food may be having a serious affect on our health.

How has the food industry changed?

What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of using high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar?

Are more women than men experiencing food related difficulties?  If so, why?

  1. Heleena wants to research what is put into our food because what is put into our food may be having a negative impact on our health.

Three questions to help narrow research:

    1) What companies/industries use fructrose corn syrup the most?

    2) What are some examples of allergic reactions? (like what kind of reactions do people exhbit when they injest fructrose)

    3) If the fructrose results in allerigc reactions, what needs to be done to fix the problem?

Three types of evidence that might be useful:

    1) Statistics (what percentage of people suffer from food related allergies involving fructrose?)

    2) A personal account of someone in the food industry and/or someone who suffers from fructrose intolerance

    3) Scientific article on the changes in the food industry

  2. Although people may not have an allergy to high fructose itself, I am interested in finding out if fuctose somehow effects our reactions to other food, especially sugars.

I agree that it would be useful to find out what companies use fructose more and possibly to compare them with another company that does not.

I am interested in researching the changes in the food industry, especially the introduction of high fructose corn syrup. I want to learn more about this so I can find out if there’s a connection between fructose and the recent increase in food related allergies, especially the way our bodies react to sugar with problems like hypoglycemia or diabetes. This is important because if fructose (a replacement for sugar) is affecting the way our body digests sugar, by avoiding it, other problems may be avoided as well.

  3. Before I can answer the question of what they say, I need to do more research on why companies are chosing to use high fructose corn syrup instead of (or in additon to real sugar). By answering that question, I will be more ready to explain what “they say” and more ready to form an opinion for what “I say.”
