Controversary in new first person shooter game

FOX News called out Bulletstorm as the “Worst Video Game in the World” due to the extreme amount of violence.

This game, Bulletstorm released on February 22, 2011, seems to be creating a lot of buzz in the first person shooter world.  As you can see by the youtube video, you gain points by shooting people in the “genitals” and then kicking their head off.  Doctors have said that the gore and profanity could seriously traumatize a child under the age of 9.  The game looks awesome 🙂

The game looks awesome, but i understand the concern with it. For a kid under the age of 9, shooting people in the genitals and cutting their heads off is a dream come true! Especially for boys who fantasize about doing this to someone and think it’s cool, doing it in a videogame will probably make them want to do it to someone in real life, too. I think it’s dangerous and the game shouldn’t be sold.

I believe that a person or thing can suggest or influence someone to do something, but not that anyone or anything can “make” them do it. For instance, advertisements do not force you to buy what they offer. Violence in a videogame may desensitize one to blood and gore and may make violence appealing (rewards in game), but when push comes to shove and someone actually harms or kills another they cannot say the videogame made me do it. The blame rests on the individual who made poor choices in his or her life regardless of any bad influences. Should children whose minds are easily impressionable play these games? No! I agree with you that they should not and I’m glad that the game is rated M by the ESRB. As to the game being sold, I believe it’s ok to sell it to the intended age group. My hope is that no parent in his right mind will allow his child to play this game or any others like it. My little sister saw a scooby-doo episode and has had nightmares for weeks. Scooby-doo frights pale in comparison to something like this. Just before sitting down to write this post she came downstairs nearly in tears. I comforted her and walked her back up to bed and waited until she nodded to sleep. I’m doing my best now to preserve her innocent mind from senseless violence, things she doesn’t need to worry about for another few years. I totally agree with you that games, or anything else, can be dangerous in this way. Finally, I would like to again point out that I think there is nothing wrong with selling violent videogames, just that we need to be aware of how they can effect us and others.
Not an attack, just my thoughts at 1:00 AM. 🙂
